Not only will organization make it easier for you to find what you're looking for, but it will also help protect your items and ensure that they remain in good condition. Here are a 8 tips for organizing a storage unit:

Before you start packing up your storage unit, take the time to sort through your belongings and decide what you really need to keep. Consider donating or selling items that you no longer use or need. This will help you make the most of the space in your storage unit. Save yourself from paying for space you don't need by getting rid of things now instead of in the future.

When packing your storage unit, be sure to use sturdy boxes to protect your items. Avoid using flimsy boxes or bags, as they are more prone to tearing and may not provide enough support for your belongings. Bags don't stack well and make it harder to organize your unit. Things in bags will be harder to find should you need to locate something that is in storage. 

As you pack your storage unit, label each box with a detailed list of its contents and number it. This will make it much easier for you to find what you're looking for when you need to access your storage unit. Keep a list of the box numbers and their contents. That way you can find things quickly, or if you needed to make an insurance claim you have an accurate list already.

For smaller items, consider using bins or containers with lids to keep them organized and protected. Put them with similar items or items from the same room to make locating them easier.

If your storage unit has high ceilings, consider using storage racks or shelves to make the most of the vertical space. This will help you keep your belongings off the ground and make it easier to access items that are stored up high. This will also avoid things in your unit falling over from a box failing because of having too much weight on top of it. Be sure to check with the facility before doing any construction or altering the unit. 

When organizing your storage unit, be sure to leave aisles or pathways between your boxes and other items. This will make it easier for you to move around and access your belongings.

You can put pallets on the floor of your unit to keep things off of the ground. This can help protect your items if there is a chance of water or snow getting tracked into the unit. 

When filling up your space, have an idea where you will place big items such as refrigerators, couches, tables, beds, and large furniture. Start with these and put smaller items on top. To maximize your space you will want to use the height of the unit to your advantage. To do this safely your large and heavy items should be on the bottom.
